MORE History
More
Robotics was founded in 2005 with a goal to offer the
FIRST experience to students who would not otherwise
have the opportunity. We are a community team made up of
students from many area schools. Our original sponsor
was Thomas More High School, who welcomed our plans and
saw them as a compliment to their Project Lead the Way
Curriculum. In 2005 we started a Vex team to participate
in a WI pilot program, and went on to Atlanta where we
competed in the official Vex kick off tournament.
We
registered for FRC and became team #1714. In the fall of
2005 we founded the Milwaukee Vex League. With support
from team 1675 and MSOE, we held weekly training
seminars followed by a friendly competition. We then
founded and hosted a Vex Invitational Tournament that
was sponsored by WIRED and Rockwell Automation. Our
objective was to offer a training opportunity as a
precursor to the FRC season, and to give teams that
didn’t have the resources for a FIRST team to have a
place to compete. Our Milwaukee Vex League and
tournament has expanded in each of its three years, and
has led to similar programs in other communities that
use our game and which we help facilitate.
Our rookie
FRC season was very successful thanks to the efforts of
many dedicated people. We competed in the Buckeye
Regional where we won the Rookie All Star Award and were
a runner-up for the Safety Award. At the Wisconsin
Regional we again won the Rookie All Star Award, as well
as the Top Rookie Seed Award and were the Safety Award
runner-up. At the FRC Championship we won the Rookie
Inspiration Award. In our second season we again
competed in the WI Regional, winning the Motorola
Quality Award, Website Award, Entrepreneurship Award,
and the Safety Award. At the Buckeye Regional we again
won the Entrepreneurship Award, and best of all, the
Engineering Inspiration Award. We went on to compete in
the Championship.
We work as
a team year round and our focus goes well beyond the
building of robots. We have established a tradition of
promoting FIRST and an awareness of the need for young
people to have opportunities for educational activities
in science, technology, engineering and math. We have
developed a partnership with Discovery World to promote
robotics education. Please visit our
“Promoting FIRST” page
for highlights. We also feel that it is important to
give back to the community, and have participated in
several service projects.
Mentoring
is another priority for us. We started a FIRST Lego Team
in 2006 that was coached and mentored by our
#1714 team members. This
year we coached Two FLL teams
of our own and mentored several others. We are helping
students and a teacher from Oak Creek High School get
involved in Vex and FRC programs.
As More
Robotics enters its third FRC season, we look forward to
new challenges, new accomplishments and fulfilling our
mission - to give young people exposure to and an
appreciation for the study of science, technology,
engineering, and math in a motivating and relevant way
to build knowledge, self confidence, leadership, and
life skills through participation in the FIRST robotics
programs.
