  • Ran 2  FLL teams and mentored several others
  • Ran a Lego Robotics 3-day camp
  • Ran the Milwaukee Vex League including an Invitational Tournament
  • Partnered with Discovery World Museum to provide exhibits and workshops
  • Demonstrated at many school, corporations, and community events
  • Provided demonstrations at Summerfest
  • Did Dean’s Homework in several ways
  • Got a Mayor’s Proclamation declaring Robotics Day in Milwaukee
  • Conducted several service projects
  • Fuel Cell Project
We also helped the kids make paper rockets that they could launch outside. We met NASA astronaut, John M. Grunsfeld, and he autographed our robot from last season.

We provided a 2-day hands-on exhibit and formal presentation about FIRST at the Rockets for Schools Competition in Sheboygan.

We provided a hands-on exhibit at the WI Elementary and Middle Level Science Teacher’s Family Science Day at Boerner Gardens.

We presented at a Girl Scout Career Fair to promote STEM education and careers in engineering to young women, and also at the FIRST Support Organization meeting at Milwaukee School of Engineering to promote mentorship and sponsorship in the community.

SUMMERFEST

This is the second year we presented at the world’s largest music festival. On kids day we set up a Vex field and Lego table and encouraged our visitors to run the robots. We also demonstrated our FRC robots. We talked to a lot of families about FIRST, and handed out information.

On a second day we collaborated with several area teams to set up a full FRC challenge and demonstrated a full competition.

We participated at the SySTEM Conference, where our team leader won the Individual sySTEM Award for all he does to promote STEM education in our community. He also sits on the advisory board of 2 Project Lead the Way High Schools.

Discovery World Museum

We had the great fortune of establishing a long-term partnership with Discovery World Hands-on Science Museum. It started when we were recommended to the museum by Rockwell Automation to present at a summer robotics camp in 2005. They were impressed with us and we have since worked closely with the museum on their robotics exhibits, demonstrations, and  educational workshops. We also held most of the league nights for the Milwaukee VEX League at Discovery World. Below you will find some examples of the work we have done:

Teaching Workshops

Senior Day

Public Demonstrations

Helping with their Lego Team

We are working on a special project which incorporates fuel cell technology as an alternative power source for operating a robot. We will be presenting this as an educational program at the museum.

Community Service

  • Partnered with Wal-Mart to raise money for Children’s Hospital of WI by selling hotdogs many weekends over the summer. We raised $1700 for the hospital.

  • Coordinated a food drive to benefit food pantries.

  • Serve meals for those in need with St. Vincent De Paul one day each month.

  • Made Thanksgiving food baskets with St. Vincent DePaul Society.

  • Donated the Rock n’ Stack field elements from our Vex Challenge to a day care.

  • Provide volunteers for FLL Mukwonago and Oak Creek Regional Tournaments, FLL State Tournament, Oconomowoc Vex Tournament, Milwaukee Vex Invitational, FRC Wisconsin Regional, FRC Buckeye Regional, and FRC Championship.

  • Partner with Project Lead the Way for Thomas More High School, and provide recruitment activities.

  • Collect soda can tabs for Ronald McDonald House.

Educational Programs

We ran a 3-day Lego Robotics Camp for 18 elementary students from 10 schools.  We taught multiple workshops at Discovery World
MORE Education Opportunities
  • We helped develop a curriculum at Barton School that uses Lego Mindstorms robots as part of the science curriculum. We also trained the staff and will continue to mentor the kids.

  • We conducted a   Boe-bot workshop  in the fall to teach electronics.

  • A teammate taught a week-long advanced robotics course at the STEPs camp at UW Stout, using Lego NXT, and encouraged campers to start and mentor FLL teams.

  • We presented and participated at the Johnson Controls Robotics Summer Camp, Sponsored by the African American Affinity Network to promote robotics to minority students.

Mentoring

  • We founded and mentored 2 FLL teams #475 and #476. Team #475 won the Gracious Professionalism Award at the Mukwonago Regional and went on to State. We serve 20 students from 14 different schools that otherwise would not have an opportunity to be on an FLL team.

  • We helped mentor other Rookie FLL teams, from the Davis Boy’s and Girl’s Club, La Causa, Milwaukee French Immersion, and Greenfield Middle School. La Causa’s team was formed after we did a demo

  • One of our team members that coaches both FLL teams and mentors others was given the Young Adult Mentor Award at State. It is the first time it was awarded in WI

  • We mentored students and mentors from Oak Creek High School who started a FIRST Vex program this season

  • Met with students from Bay View High School who are forming a new team, to share our experiences
